The Treasury said five banks repaid a total of $353 million in federal rescue funds on March 31, the first institutions to return taxpayer capital. Signature Bank repaid $120 million; Old Na tional Bancorp repaid $100 million; Iberiabank Corp. repaid $90 million; Bank of Marin Bancorp repaid $28 million; and Centra Financial Hold ings repaid $15 million.

TARP tally

The Federal Reserve said commercial banks and investment firms bor rowed less over the past week from its emergency lending program. They av eraged $59.7 billion in daily borrowing over the week that ended Wednes day, down from $62.8 bil lion the week before.

CA cuts

CA plans to cut a total of 3,100 jobs as part of a reorganization it began more than two years ago. CA, based in Islandia, LI, expects to incur about $45 million in additional ex penses, bringing total re organization costs to $345 million, it said in a filing.

CBS gains

CBS rose 21 percent in New York trading after a Merrill Lynch analyst predicted sales of reruns to cable channels will boost results in the sec ond half of the year. CBS, controlled by Sumner Redstone, gained 80 cents to $4.68.

Toyota loan

Toyota’s finance arm borrowed an undisclosed amount from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation in the first quarter to finance US car sales as private investors demanded up to 50 per cent more interest for the company’s debt.
