Jobless
The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose unexpectedly to 428,000 in the week ended Sept. 10. It was the second straight week in which claims rose. Wall Street analysts had expected a modest dip.
Citi jobs
Citigroup said it will limit hiring to only “critical” jobs as the economic slowdown continues in a move that some analysts interpreted as a hiring freeze. The bank had 263,000 employees at the end of the second quarter.
Final Crown
The last Ford Crown Victoria rolled off a Canadian assembly line yesterday, marking the end of the huge and heavy Ford line that’s been popular with taxi fleets and police departments since 1979.
Bad news
The city’s official unemployment rate rose to 8.7 percent in August from 8.6 percent in July, the State Department of Labor said.
Prices up
The consumer price index increased 0.4 percent after a 0.5 percent gain in July.
