While there are many services designed to help you digitally manage your contacts, few let you easily and reliably transfer the information from the business cards that accumulate to your smartphone.

CamCard lets you quickly and accurately scan business cards into your iPhone, BlackBerry or Android-based device.

Just take a picture of the card with your phone, and the app will upload the contact details. You can edit the information, and the image itself is stored in a searchable database featuring a thumbnail of the card with its basic contact details.

From a screen showing a larger image of the card, you can call, text or e- mail someone or map his address.

The app recognizes at least 12 different languages, including French, German, Chinese and Japanese, which is useful for global business travelers.

CamCard’s developers claim that its recognition quality is superior to that of other apps, and one reviewer noted that it correctly rendered every letter and number on a battered, 5-year-old business card.

However, other users have complained that the app has problems reading or deciphering the text on cards.

So, you might want to test out the app with one of its free “lite” versions, which allow you to scan cards without being able to store many, before you shell out $7-$15 for an app.
