Cablevision has fast-tracked its battle with Verizon’s FiOS in high-speed Internet service.
Cablevision yesterday submitted a proposal to provide wireless Internet access to riders of the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North trains servicing Westchester, Connecticut and other points north of Manhattan.
Cablevision’s proposal, submitted to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, would offer free WiFi to commuters who are also Optimum Online Internet customers. Non-customers would be given “a reasonable access option.”
The move comes as Cablevision and Verizon battle to dominate the market for high-speed Internet, TV and phone service. Verizon didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
A spokesman with the MTA would only confirm that it had received six proposals by the deadline.
