Housekeeping is on the menu at Chipotle Mexican Grill.

After turning in a stronger-than-expected fourth quarter with revenues up 7.3 percent — thanks to a 5 percent price hike, a 0.9 percent rise in comparable sales and profits above Wall Street’s estimates — the burrito chain said Tuesday it will invest $50 million in tidying up its 2,408 restaurants.

Many of the 25-year-old company’s eateries across the country have had “deferred maintenance” projects that management thinks will help the restaurants look “shinier, brighter and cleaner.”
The Denver chain is also considering new store designs.

On the down side, customer traffic continued to slide in the fourth quarter.

Chipotle’s shares declined as much as 6 percent in after- hours trading, to $286.
