Coin-ing a record
The US Mint’s Silver Eagle 1 oz. coin is flying off the shelf at about $33 a coin.
The 2011-dated coins were first issued on Jan. 3 and 3.5 million coins were sold in the first two weeks, according to numismatic Web site Coin News.
In January 2009, the silver coins first topped the 3 million sales mark, with record sales totaling 3.59 million.
That record may fall sometime this week, according to some market watchers, if sales continue.
The all-time monthly mark of 4.26 million silver coins, which was set last November, is plainly in sight, said the Web site.
