Comcast’s second-quarter profit grew 16 percent and beat Wall Street estimates as revenue popped at its NBCUniversal unit and video-subscriber losses slowed compared to last year.
The cable giant yesterday also said Netflix cash boosted its NBCUniversal coffers in the period.
Comcast reported a 19 percent jump in revenue to $1.7 billion at its broadcast TV division, which encompasses the NBC and Telemundo networks. The increase came in part from a content-licensing deal with Netflix, coupled with a 7 percent increase in ad revenue.
NBCUniversal was able to demand higher ad prices, thanks to its hit show “The Voice,” amid a buoyant ad market.
While things are looking up at the broadcast network, NBCU CEO Steve Burke, warned analysts on the earnings call that a turnaround at the fourth-place network may take some time. “It probably won’t even happen in two years — might take three or four.”
Comcast said it lost 238,000 video customers in the quarter, down from a loss of 265,000 in the prior period.
