The Dallas Cowboys are No. 1 – at least in terms of worth.

The five-time Super Bowl champions overtook the Washington Redskins as the most valuable franchise, according to Forbes’ annual ranking of NFL team valuations.

Thanks in part to the construction of a new $1 billion stadium, Forbes values the Cowboys at $1.5 billion, a 28 percent increase from the previous year. The Redskins, who held the top spot for the past seven years, fell to No. 2, with only a 3 percent increase in value to $1.47 billion.

Only three other teams – New England Patriots, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles – cracked the $1 billion mark.

New York’s Giants and Jets were among the biggest gainers on the list, with Big Blue gaining seven spots to land at No. 8 and the Gang Green jumping an even more impressive nine slots to make the top 10 for the first time.

Forbes pegged the Giants’ value at $974 million, a 9 percent jump from last year, while the Jets’ worth swelled 10 percent to $967 million.

And with a new stadium being constructed, Forbes’ sports valuation guru Michael Ozanian predicts that both New York teams’ fortunes are bound to improve.

There was a wide disparity in value between last year’s Super Bowl finalists: the losing Chicago Bears are ranked seventh with a value of $984 million, and the champion Indianapolis Colts a distant 21st at $911 million.

Forbes’ $782 million valuation for the Minnesota Vikings ranked the team as the least valuable of the NFL’s 32 franchises.
