Strong demand for luxury French handbags stands in stark contrast to struggling US designers like Michael Kors and Coach — both of which have been working overtime to stem same-store sales declines.

Coach’s North American comparable-store sales declined 9.5 percent from a year earlier in the three months ended Sept. 26.

At Michael Kors, same-store sales declined 8.5 percent over the same three-month period versus a year ago.

The sales declines have produced a year-to-date stock decline of 42 percent at Kors and 15 percent at coach.

“Handbags continue to move out of favor,” according to Cowan and Co.’s national handbag survey, which shows the demand for Michael Kors bags slowing as well.
