Elon Musk could start swinging the ax to lay off Twitter employees as soon as Saturday, according to a new report.

The new Twitter owner has ordered company-wide cuts, the New York Times reported citing people with knowledge of the situation.

The paper said the staff cuts would come before Tuesday when employees were scheduled to get stock grants as part of their compensation.

Cuts of the 7,500-person Twitter workforce have been expected after the billionaire’s takeover of the social media giant. He fired several top executives Thursday.

On Friday, several pranksters gathered outside the company’s San Francisco headquarters with cardboard boxes pretending to news organizations that they had been fired.

The Times said neither Twitter nor Musk responded to requests for comment.
