Filene’s Basement Inc., the century-old clothing chain, sought bankruptcy protection for the second time in almost a decade after sales slumped.

Filene’s filed a Chapter 11 petition yesterday in US Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., citing more than $100 million in liabilities and between $50 million and $100 million in assets.

An affiliate of Buxbaum Group, a liquidating and consulting company based in Agoura Hills, Calif., bought Filene’s on April 22.
