The US Treasury reported that more than 100 companies applied to become asset managers under the government’s initiative to purchase distressed securities from the nation’s banks.

The Treasury expects to inform applicants of preliminary qualification around May 15, according to the statement. Under the Public Private Investment Program, the government will provide financing to private investors to help remove the toxic assets hampering an increase in bank lending.
