Some smartphone app makers refuse to idle while the courts sort out the city’s cab-hailing conundrum.
While a judge is weeks away from ruling on whether to allow a pilot program that enables customers to hail yellow cabs using apps, at least one app maker is switching lanes.
Instead of counting on a ruling that would allow the service to work with yellow cabs, GetTaxi is launching a mobile service to coordinate rides with black cars.
Livery and black-car drivers have argued that allowing yellow cabs to “pre-arrange” rides via smartphones apps is a threat to their business.
The livery industry was set to square off against the Taxi and Limousine Commission, which backs the pilot program, at a hearing yesterday.
Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Carol Huff decided to forego the hearing because she had enough information in filings and documents.
A GetTaxi spokesperson said it wants “what is best for New York, so let the best group win.”
