Larry Page, Google’s hoarse-voiced CEO, a day after announcing he had been afflicted with rare vocal-chord paralysis, made a surprise appearance on stage at the company’s I/O developers conference and took questions from the audience.

He said that computer science has a marketing problem and that to entice students into the field it had to be made cool.

That’s why the company agreed to participate in next month’s movie, “The Internship,” starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as interns at the Mountain View, Calif., company.

After Page’s turn on stage, it was back to showing off all of the innovations Google has been working on, and there were many on just Day 1 of the three-day affair:

* Google said that it has activated 900 million mobile devices running its Android operating system.

* It launched its latest music effort with a $9.99 monthly streaming service to compete with the likes of Spotify and Rdio.

* Google Maps on desktop and mobile received a redesign with a sleeker look and deeper integration with other products.

* Samsung will offer a Galaxy S4 that will do away with its own software add-ons, emphasizing Google’s latest operating system and services. It will cost $649 unlocked.

* Also, Google+ got an update with new options for storing photos and managing image slide shows.

* Google Wallet updates included a simple way to send and receive money between friends through gmail.
