Mr. Schmidt is going to Washington.
Google’s Eric Schmidt, who became executive chairman after stepping down as CEO in January, will face Congress at an antitrust hearing slated for September.
The search giant is facing multiple investigations by state attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission, which is looking into whether Google is wieldingits search dominance to slam competitors. Google powers two-thirds of all online searches in the US.
The Senate’s antitrust subcommittee, headed by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, asked Google in a letter last month to send either Schmidt or CEO Larry Page to testify. After Google’s initial reluctance, Lee’s office said yesterday that Schmidt will appear at the hearing.
