At least one prankster has had some laughs at the expense of the New York Times’ money troubles — a hacker who spread porn to a half-million users of its Twitter feed.
Followers of the newspaper’s wholesome Twitter account, “The Moment,” were greeted by an iPhone screen grab promoting naked and anything-goes Webcam action, 100 percent free, according to Gawker.com, which reported it.
Gawker also posted the Times’ Twitter apology: “Yes, we were hacked! What a lousy way to thank our half-million followers. Sorry everybody!”
The stunt evoked much joking that the Times could use the extra cash from porn promos to pay its bills amid declining bank accounts and rising losses.
“It was a test to see how it would fly with readers if they tried to pick up some of the Craigslist slack,” one Twitter member responded, referring to a crackdown on explicit ads on Craigslist.
Another wrote: “The way the [Times is] bleeding money, it’s not a stretch to say it’s legit.”
One offered that the hacker got his password from one of the following phrases: “Pending Bankruptcy,” “%&*! Paycuts,” “Save Us Geffen,” “Dowd Rocks,” “Clinton ’12,” “Rosenbergs Were Innocent,” or “We Hate America!”
