“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” cast a spell over movie audiences this weekend, conjuring up a whopping $125.1 million, according to studio estimates.
The boffo box-office bucks shattered the franchise’s record for a “Potter” film opening. “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” raked in $103 million on its opening weekend in 2005.
The only other film to open over the weekend was the Russell Crowe thriller “The Next Three Days,” which garnered a comparatively paltry $9.2 million.
Coming in second behind “Potter” was the animated comedy “Megamind,” featuring the voice of Will Ferrell, bringing in $16.2 million. In three weeks, the cartoon has earned $109.5 million.
“Unstoppable” was third with $13 million, followed by the comedy “Due Date” with $9.2 million.
