Cablevision must continue to carry a local TV station based 122 miles away from its Bethpage, LI, headquarters, after the US Supreme Court refused to hear the cable operator’s challenge to the so-called “must-carry” rule.

The court chose not to take up an appeal by Cablevision of the Federal Communications Commission’s must-carry rules, which require cable companies to carry all local, over-the-air stations.

Cablevision and other cable operators including Time Warner Cable had argued that widespread competition from satellite companies and the telephone companies provide consumers with plenty of programming choice.

The Cablevision case centers on the company and its carriage of WRNN, a TV station based in Kingston.
