Home Depot is offering free identity protection services to any customers who might have been affected by its data breach to try to soothe consumers’ pre-Christmas jitters.

“We are offering customers who used a payment card at a Home Depot store in 2014, from April on, 12 months of free identity protection services, including credit monitoring,” the company said in a letter on its website Sunday.

It said there was no evidence that debit PIN numbers were compromised.

Home Depot said Thursday a data breach lasting for months at its stores in the US and Canada affected 56 million debit and credit cards, far more than a pre-Christmas 2013 attack at Target.

The malware used in the breach that took place between April and September has been eliminated, the company said.
