Standard & Poor’s downgraded Hungary’s credit ratings to junk status yesterday, citing weak policy “credibility” and questions about the independence of financial oversight agencies in the beleaguered nation’s government.

S&P lowered its long- and short-term sovereign credit ratings on Hungary to BB+/B from BBB-/A-3 and its long-term counterparty credit rating on Hungary’s central bank to BB+ from BBB-.
