Dear John: I received an offer for an American Express platinum card that promised me 100,000 points when I was approved.
After a month, I called AmEx customer service to see about switching to the EveryDay card. I was assured that downgrading would have absolutely no impact on my award points. So I switched.
Within one month, I received a letter stating that my 100,000 points were being revoked because I canceled my platinum card.
Had the representative informed me that I would lose the points, I never would have downgraded. So my question is: Did AmEx fail to properly train its representative, thereby resulting in misinformation being provided to me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. P.T.
Dear P.T.: My bet is on the representative being misinformed. But I’ll ask AmEx.
But, seriously, you must have suspected that you’d lose the 100,000 points if you went for a lower-quality credit card.
