JAN. AUTO SALES TANK
Detroit’s wrecked sales of autos continued to litter the profit highway with some of the worst January results in 27 years.
General Motors, Ford Motor, Toyota and Nissan were among auto giants yesterday reporting wipeouts, raising prospects of more layoffs in the industry.
GM plunged 49 percent, Ford flopped 40 percent, while Toyota dropped 32 percent and Nissan fell 30 percent. Honda was down 28 percent, Mercedes-Benz was off 36 percent and Volkswagen fell 12 percent.
