The Daily News thinned its editorial ranks yesterday, trimming at least 10 staffers as part of an ongoing effort to stem losses at the Mort Zuckerman-owned paper.
One source said the layoffs could reach 15 when reporters who roll in late for the overnight shift receive their pink slips.
Among those to get their walking papers were Bob Kappstatter, a 43-year veteran who had been moved from his traditional base in The Bronx to the “police shack” in downtown Manhattan earlier this year, and Frank Lombardi, a political reporter who had put in 38 years at the paper.
“It’s been a fantastic run,” said Kappstatter when reached yesterday.
Editor-In-Chief Kevin Convey has been under pressure from Zuckerman to cut costs and move to a “platform agnostic” newsroom that combines print and digital operations.
That has created friction between long-time print reporters, who were downsized yesterday, and the newer Web reporters, who were spared the pain.
Sources said that two photographers and three reporters — two who covered the courts in Manhattan and Brooklyn and another on the City Hall beat — were also among those cut.
A News spokeswoman said, “We don’t comment on personnel.”
