Macy’s is getting its geek on.

After exiting the consumer electronics business over the past decade, the department store inked a licensing deal with Best Buy to carry smartphones, tablets and headphones in 10 stores beginning in November, just in time for holiday shopping season.

“This collaboration with Best Buy reinforces Macy’s as a shopping destination throughout the year for the products that are most in demand,” said Macy’s president, Jeff Gennette.

The vast majority of Macy’s sales come from clothing, shoes and home goods, but increasingly consumers are spending their disposable income on technology. Macy’s same-store sales in the second quarter declined 2.1 percent.

The Best Buy deal is the latest such partnership for Macy’s, which announced an arrangement in June with Men’s Wearhouse to sell tuxedos. Macy’s has similar deals with Sunglass Hut, Finish Line and rug retailer Kenneth Mink.

The tech departments will be staffed with Best Buy employees and will occupy about 300 square feet. Best Buy installed its Geek Squad team in Target stores a couple of years ago, but that partnership ended, said a Best Buy spokeswoman.

Separately, Macy’s announced Tuesday, it will close 35 to 40 underperforming stores early next year, though it did not identify their locations.

The company, which also owns Bloomingdale’s, operates 885 stores of which 770 are Macy’s stores. Over the past five years, Macy’s has closed 52 stores, while opening 12 new ones. This fall it’s opening six new Macy’s Backstage off-price locations. Last year, it closed 20 Macy’s stores.
