While the headline Labor Dept. numbers showed mixed results, a deeper dive into the jobs report showed reasons for optimism.

As the charts (right) show, the average work week grew, to 34.5 hours, something that has to happen before employers add to payroll. Plus, wages grew.

On the downside, the percentage of underemployed American remained steady at 14.7 percent.
