The Trump administration isn’t done putting the screws on China to get to North Korea.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Tuesday the White House won’t hesitate to impose potentially devastating economic sanctions against the world’s second-biggest economy if they don’t do more to help sideline the Hermit Kingdom.
“Economic warfare works,” Mnuchin said during an industry conference one day after the United Nations imposed additional sanctions against the rogue nuclear state.
“If China doesn’t follow these sanctions, we will put additional sanctions on them and prevent them from accessing the US international dollar system,” Mnuchin said, referring to a particularly harsh form of punishment that has been used by the US against rogue states like Iran.
The Trump administration has repeatedly voiced frustration over China’s lack of cooperation with the US in putting the squeeze on North Korea.
“While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi & China to help with North Korea, it has not worked out. At least I know China tried!” President Trump tweeted in June.
