MORTGAGE HAS VALUE
Dear John: Countrywide holds our mortgage and is in financial trouble. How will this affect us? Will we lose our mortgage or have it recalled? G.S.
Dear G.S.: Countrywide was wobbly but now may be stabilized. Bank of America, which doesn’t seem to have the same magnitude of problems as other institutions, is in the process of taking over Countrywide.
Whether Countrywide gets bought, or folds or gets combined with someone other than Bank of America really isn’t your problem. Your mortgage loan is an asset. And, as such, someone will eventually buy it from Countrywide. Even if there is utter chaos, someone in time will decide that your loan – like thousands of others on Countrywide’s books – has value.
These loans get traded back and forth all the time. It’s rare that a mortgage stays with the organization that wrote it. Nevertheless, just to be safe, you should discuss your concerns with a real estate attorney.
