Dear John: I’m the new communications director at the MTA. I saw the column last week and wanted to let you know a couple things we’re doing specifically to address the clarity of announcements.

We’re deploying staff with amplification (aka portable speakers) to stations we’ve identified where the speakers need to be fixed. We’re auditing the speakers at every single station to identify where fixes need to be made.

On board, we’re making the repair of speakers a part of our accelerated car maintenance program. And, of course, as we bring in new R179 trains and put them in service, they’ll have far superior sound systems to what we’ve got now.

Not sure who you spoke with, but they certainly should’ve let you know all this.

Thanks. Jon Weinstein

Dear Jon: That’s certainly is a better answer than I got before, and welcomed.

One suggestion from me: When the announcements are made on trains, slow down. Especially when the conductors have accents. It’s difficult to follow if they rush through the announcements.
