This’ll take a few bucks out of your pocket.
Thanks to a court ruling, stores in New York state will be allowed to charge you more if you use a credit card than if you use cash. You already are used to this when buying gas, but now you could get hit with a credit card surcharge on your groceries as well.
Stores don’t have to charge you more, but I bet they will.
“Business owners will now have to decide if they want to implement the practice and then determine whether or not their customers complain,” says Andrew Rigie, executive director of the NYC Hospitality Alliance, which represents the restaurant industry.
The issue, which had gone all the way to the US Supreme Court, was being discussed in a NY Appeals Court before New York state and a merchants association came to terms by getting rid of the prohibition.
Florida, Texas and California recently abolished their bans on charging more to use a credit card. There are six states that still ban the practice, so move to one of them if you don’t like this.
