Results from a new survey by financial data Web site MoneyRates.com, found plenty of banks offer free checking, but there’s a catch — fees may apply.
“Free checking accounts still exist, and in particular, you can get free checking just about anywhere if you maintain a specified minimum account balance,” according to Richard Barrington, personal finance expert at MoneyRates.com.
But as banks move to offset the loss of traditional lucrative streams of revenue — notably from the debit card swipe fees and overdraft charges — as a result of new regulations, some banks are closely looking at a range of new checking account fees.
The fees could include:
* Higher minimum balance on checking accounts.
* Additional fees for previously free services such as mailing out account statements and processing paper checks.
* Raising charges on wire and other fund transfers.
* Reducing rates on interest-bearing accounts.
