Attention, Whole Foods shoppers: Doritos, Cheetos and other organic versions of Frito-Lay snack brands could soon land in the chip aisle of the major natural-foods supermarket chain.
The Frito-Lay company has been marketing healthier products as consumers swap junk food for kale salads and other “clean” alternatives, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.
There are now 11 Frito-Lay chip brands without artificial ingredients.
The organic snacks are marketed under the name Simply — and appear to fit well with Whole Foods’ marketing philosophy.
With Whole Foods’ recent $13.7 billion purchase by Amazon, the online-retailing behemoth that already sells the Simply line of noshes, the grocery chain could soon become a new frontier for brands like Ruffles, Funyuns and Tostitos.
“Amazon’s acquisition makes it much more likely that Whole Foods will carry these better-for-you brands,” said Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst Ali Dibadj.
“The smaller brands just can’t keep up with the spending . . . required from Amazon anymore,” he said. “We expect Whole Foods to carry more — and more big brands, too.”
