Perdue Farms is yanking thousands of pounds of its chicken nuggets off store shelves because they may contain pieces of wood.
The company recalled 68,244 pounds of organic gluten-free chicken nuggets nationwide, citing contamination fears, the company said Thursday.
The chicken was pulled after several customers wrote to the firm, squawking about biting into pieces of a tree.
“The problem was discovered when the firm received three consumer complaints that wood was found in the product,” the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement.
The product —which is sold in a white bag labeled Perdue Simply Smart Organics Chicken Breast Nuggets — was produced on Oct. 25, 2018, with a bar code 72745-80656.
On Friday, there had been no confirmed reports about anyone getting sick from the nuggets. But health officials urged consumers who froze the nuggets to throw them away.
Perdue said it “voluntarily” recalled the food and that only a “minimal amount” of packages may contain pieces of wood.
The company recalled all of the product produced on Oct. 25 to be extra cautious, it said.
“After a thorough investigation, we strongly believe this to be an isolated incident, as only a minimal amount of these packages has the potential to contain pieces of wood,” said Jeff Shaw, Perdue’s vice president for quality assurance.
“If you have any of these packages in your home, please do not consume the product and contact Perdue Foods at 877-727-3447 for a full refund of your purchase,” the company said in the press release.
