MTV President Christina Norman is calling it quits.

According to several reports, Norman has decided to leave the Viacom-owned company after 17 years and explore other opportunities.

Her departure – at month’s end – will leave MTV Networks Music and Logo Group President Van Toffler in charge of overseeing day-to-day operations at MTV, MTV2, mtvU and MTV.com until a successor is named.

Norman’s departure – after almost three full years as president – comes as MTV is experiencing a resurgence.

Shows such as “The Hills” and “A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila” have pulled the cable giant out of a steep ratings rut.

The network is also in the midst of beefing up its online programming.

Toffler sent out a memo to MTV staffers yesterday notifying them of her decision.

“It pains me to see her go, but I respect her decision,” Toffler said in the memo, adding, “She will always be part of the legend and success of our company.”

Since becoming president in 2005 – after previously heading sister company VH1 for 12 months – Norman launched the socially conscious network ThinkMTV, helped flood the station with new shows, as well as revamped the Video Music Awards and MTV Movie Awards.

Viacom shares closed at $39.26, up 12 cents yesterday.
