LOS ANGELES — Movie fans are going to “Rio” in big numbers, but they’re not quite screaming over the latest installment of a slasher-comedy franchise.

“Rio,” Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg’s animated family flick, led the weekend box office with a $40 million debut, according to studio estimates.

“Scream 4” opened at No. 2, but with just $19.3 million. Its last two sequels debuted at over $30 million.
