Samsung & RIM’s tablets in
Well, the price is right. Now, will they sell?
Both Research in Motion and Samsung revealed prices on their new tablet computers that can compete with Apple, whose iPad 2 has significantly undercut rivals.
RIM’s new PlayBook, which will hit store shelves April 19, starts at $499, the same as the iPad 2, and Samsung’s updated and slimmer Galaxy Tab will start at $499 when the 10.1-inch model goes on sale June 8. The 8.9-inch model will cost $469 when released this summer.
Until now, some of Apple’s tablet rivals, such as the Motorola’s Xoom, had not been priced so competitively.
Analysts said that manufacturers would start cutting prices when it became clear their gadgets couldn’t compete with Apple at such high prices.
Still, RIM’s PlayBook has not been given much of a chance, with some analysts predicting only 500,000 sold by the end of the fiscal year. Apple sold 1 million iPad 2s in its first weekend.
