News of the $4 billion Disney-Marvel merger sent shock waves through Internet chat rooms yesterday, as fans fretted that Disney’s family-oriented fairy tales will be a bad fit for Marvel’s dark, edgy, crime-fueled story lines.
“Can you imagine?” wrote one member at the online discussion forum Toonzone.
“In the theatre, the Disney logo flashes by on the screen, followed by the Marvel logo, followed by a bloody skull with ‘The Punisher 2’ emblazoned on it.”
Disney has long managed its way through some seemingly odd fits.
Disney’s Miramax unit has produced less-than-wholesome movies like “Reservoir Dogs” and “Trainspotting,” and its ABC network’s lineup includes “Desperate Housewives.”
Gareb Shamus — CEO of Lizard Entertainment, a publisher of comic-oriented magazines — was among those who predicted a happy ending for the tie-up.
“Now, Disney can create a way for dads to interact with their sons the way moms interact with daughters,” he told The Post.
Still, some fans fretted that Disney might soften some of the harder edges at Marvel.
“I wonder if Disney would have let the Ultimate version of the Hulk be a big horny cannibal,” wrote Toonzone member Shawn Hawkins.
