In a bid to steal some of the thunder of Amazon’s Kindle, consumer-electronics giant Sony today will unveil two new digital-reading devices, including a touch-screen version and one priced cheaper than its more popular rival.

The Sony Reader Pocket Edition will retail for $199 and can store about 350 eBooks in a device small enough to fit into a jacket pocket. The device comes in navy blue, rose or silver.

Sony also plans to unveil a touch version of its Reader that will retail for $299 and come in the colors red, black, or silver. Both devices will be available for sale by the end of the month.

Sony’s Reader is different from Amazon’s Kindle in that it is an open-format system. While only books bought on Amazon.com are compatible with the Kindle, Sony’s Reader works with any eBook.
