Sprint Nextel shareholders have approved a $21.6 billion deal with Tokyo-based SoftBank, agreeing to give it control of the third-largest US wireless carrier.

SoftBank still requires a nod from the Federal Communications Commission.

The decision ends a contest that saw a $25.5 billion counteroffer from Dish Network and a bidding war for Clearwire.
