Walmart’s announcement on Wednesday about the launch of a major tech product was going well — until a technical glitch nearly ruined it.

The Bentonville, Ark., chain’s video and a telephone press conference to tout its new mobile payment service — Walmart Pay — broke down when reporters were either unable to view the live video or were confused by what they should do once the video ended.

By the time the phone conference began, some reporters were befuddled, asking “What’s the news about?” and complaining that they couldn’t access the video.

Technology, of course, can trip up even the most savvy companies. Apple had technical difficulties twice while unveiling iPhones.

As for Walmart Pay, the retailer said it was the first chain to offer its own payment solution that works with any mobile device.

The chain does not accept Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Wallet.
