The Census Bureau is an organization that should be euthanized. Except we can’t put it out of its misery because our Congress in 1790 decided that the government should take a head count of all its citizens every 10 years.
The next so-called decennial census will take place in 2020, and nothing is going right. The cost of this census is almost unfathomable, and infighting among the folks who will conduct the nationwide survey continues.
The latest is a report from the inspector general of the Commerce Department — which controls the Census Bureau — that’s critical of the amount of the office space needed for the decennial census.
In a report in late April, the inspector general’s office made it clear that it didn’t believe the cost-reduction estimates on needed rental office space — mainly because the Census Bureau wasn’t providing enough information.
The inspector general said the actions the Census Bureau is taking “will not result in projected cost savings.” At this point, I think that even George Washington would agree to call the whole thing off.
