Shares in TiVo gained more than 50 percent yesterday after a Texas judge ruled in favor of the digital video recorder maker in its patent infringement lawsuit against EchoStar Communications.
The court’s decision, which determined that EchoStar infringed upon TiVo’s patent for technology, should end a legal standoff between the two companies that dates back to 2004.
But late yesterday a US appeals court stayed the Texas court’s order forcing EchoStar and DISH Network to disable millions of digital video recorders that infringe on a patent.
EchoStar lost the original case and it was barred from using its technology during the appeal process.
The earlier news sent TiVo shares surging 53 percent, or $3.72, to $10.70.
