Top UBS banker Aryeh Bourkoff is stepping down from the Swiss financial giant, where he rose through the ranks to become one of the best known deal-makers in technology, media and telecom.

UBS sent out a memo yesterday saying Bourkoff, 39, had “resigned from UBS in order to pursue other opportunities.” Steve Cummings will serve as the interim head of investment banking for the Americas.

Bourkoff’s exit is another high-profile loss for UBS, which has seen an exodus of investment bankers since paring pay.

Sources say that Bourkoff, who managed a staff of about 100, wanted to focus more on building relationships and doing deals and less on managing staff.

Bourkoff, who declined to comment, is mulling a number of options, including launching his own advisory business, say sources familiar with his thinking.

He may also join another firm such as of Moelis & Co., launched by former UBS pro Ken Moelis.

Bourkoff had been with UBS for 13 years, first as analyst before making the move to investment banking.
