US confident (or not)
You’d have to excuse Americans if they didn’t know if they were supposed to be upbeat on the economy — are overly bearish.
The Conference Board index yesterday showed that consumer confidence fell 4 percent in January after two straight months of gains.
The downbeat news contrasted with last week’s more optimistic reading of consumer sentiment. On Friday, Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan’s January reading on consumer confidence jumped 5 percent.
