JPMorgan Chase said the Justice Department found the firm broke civil laws in selling mortgage-backed securities and that the bank is facing a criminal probe.

The department’s civil division told the bank in May of its preliminary finding after examining securities tied to subprime and Alt-A loans, the lender said yesterday in a regulatory filing. The instruments were sold in 2005 through 2007, the firm said.
