Luxury department store chain Neiman Marcus reported lousy quarterly earnings last week, with sales down more than 7 percent from a year ago.

But one thing that’s flying out the door of its 42 stores are velvet shoes and handbags. “This fall we had amazing success with velvet,” said Chief Executive Karen Katz on an investor call. “It was all over the shoe, bag department. We didn’t have enough velvet shoes and bags.”

Velvet is having a moment, says Roseanne Morrison, fashion director of The Doneger Group, adding that demand for the soft fabric hasn’t been this strong in close to a decade.

“It’s an evolution of the hippie, Bohemian story that is not going away,” Morrison said.
