Walmart is yanking containers of fresh-cut fruit from its shelves because of possible listeria contamination.

The packages — which include sliced apples, mangos, pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe and grapes — were shipped to Walmart distribution centers in nine states where they were sent to select stores in the South and Midwest, including Texas and Illinois.

The potentially contaminated fruit was in containers with a “best if used by” date between Oct. 3 and Oct. 11, according to a recall alert posted on the Food and Drug Administration web site on Saturday.

“The recall is a precautionary measure due to a possible health risk from Listeria Monocytogenes detected on equipment used in an area near where these products are packed,” Country Fresh, the supplier of the containers, said in the recall notice. “FDA discovered these findings during a recent inspection.”

Listeria can cause high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the agency said.

Walmart immediately removed the packages from its shelves, the FDA said.

There has been a rash of contaminated food outbreaks in recent months, including 41 people who were infected with salmonella in 10 states from eating mushrooms this year and 126 people who got sick from peaches this summer and over 1,500 who became ill with salmonella in the US and Canada from onions.
