Walmart: Save money, shoot guns.
Parents shopping at one of the retail giant’s stores in Indiana got an eye-opening surprise on Wednesday — when they stumbled upon a back-to-school display featuring an array of firearms.
“Own the school year like a hero,” the display said.
The words were posted on a sign directly above a glass gun case, which was filled with various hunting rifles.
Needless to say, the move didn’t sit well with social media users.
“Oh @Walmart,” tweeted Ismail Kidd Noorzai, who posted a photo of the dastardly display.
“What are you suggesting,” wrote user @ZijZ.
“Must be grizzly bear season in the schools again. Right, #BetsyDevos?” another said.
Walmart later apologized for the sign and said it had been removed “as soon as we found out the store location.”
“This is horrible,” the company said in a tweet. “We’re so sorry for this mistake.”
A spokesperson told CNNMoney that Walmart was “not happy” with what happened at the location in Evansville, Indiana — and that they were “working diligently” to find out who was responsible.
“This REALLY isn’t acceptable,” the company tweeted. “We’re looking into how this could have happened.”
Walmart has had a bad track record in the past when it comes to its marketing.
Last year, a Panama City Beach location came under fire after one of its employees stacked boxes of Coca-Cola to resemble the World Trade Center before the anniversary of 9/11.
In 2014, the retail giant was forced to apologize for selling “fat girl costumes” on its website.
“Truth in advertising, not always the best idea,” wrote one Twitter user.
