The Microsoft executive who brought Windows 8 to market and then left the company just weeks after it dropped, will be paid $14.2 million, the software giant said in a regulatory filing late Wednesday.

The pay for Steven Sinofsky, former head of Microsoft’s Windows division who worked at the company for 23 years, represents most of his previously awarded stock.

The settlement took roughly seven months to hammer out.

Windows 8 was roundly bashed and some had speculated that its poor reception hastened Sinofsky’s exit.
