The spread of the coronavirus pandemic led to the postponement of the NBA season Wednesday night and the cancellation of multiple college basketball tournaments on Thursday.
The Big Ten, SEC, Pac-12, AAC, Atlantic 10 and Big 12 all announced they were ending play after initially planning to go ahead as scheduled. The Big East belatedly made the same announcement after St. John’s and Creighton had played the first half of their Thursday afternoon game at Madison Square Garden.
On Wednesday, the NCAA announced it would be barring fans from attending the tournament that starts next week. All the power conferences followed by restricting spectator access to their tournaments later in the day, before most of them canceled on Thursday.
