After collapsing during a game over the weekend, Florida men’s basketball player Keyontae Johnson is in a medically induced coma, his grandfather told USA Today on Monday.
Johnson received initial treatment in Tallahassee shortly after he was taken off the court on a stretcher in the first half of Saturday’s game between the Gators and Florida State. His grandfather, Larry DeJarnett, told USA Today that his grandson was then transported to Gainesville, Fla. on Monday.
Doctors were hoping to bring Johnson out of the coma Monday afternoon, according to DeJarnett.
“They’re just not sure,” DeJarnett said. “He may have had activity in the brain, so they induced the coma. They put him on medication to keep him sedated.”
Johnson, the SEC’s preseason player of the year, was initially described as being in critical but stable condition when he was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
It’s unclear if Johnson had previously tested positive for the coronavirus or if his condition is in any way connected to COVID-19. Florida had to pause team activities last month following a slew of positive coronavirus tests, with coach Mike White admitting the team has had previous issues with COVID-19.
